Throughout my childhood, I remember numerous moments in video games that scared me to death. Among the earliest memories are in Resident Evil, when you’re walking down a quiet hallway, listening only to your own footsteps, and those dogs suddenly burst through the windows and attack you. I was so shocked that I threw my PlayStation controller and ran to the living room to sit next to my mom. A golden age of horror was experienced during the PS1 era; Silent Hill’s sound design, Parasite Eve’s spontaneous combustion, and Clock Tower’s terror of being chased by Scissorman.
Those days are over, and gamers in 2022 aren’t scared by otherworldly terrors – they’re scared by their peers.
