In Gain Ground each character in Gain Ground is equipped with a different weapon, allowing players to control one of them at a time. To complete a level, one character must reach the exit point before the time runs out or all the enemies must be destroyed before time runs out. The arcade version has forty levels. The Genesis/Mega Drive and Master System versions have fifty levels.
