In June, Nintendo announced Super Mario Bros. Wonder, the first all-new 2D Mario platformer since the Wii U launched. We’ve received multiple rereleases, two Super Mario Maker games, two mainline 3D titles, and even a mobile auto-runner since the last 2D game released 11 years ago. In the past two decades, the New Super Mario Bros. series dominated the 2D side of the iconic franchise, but Super Mario Bros. Wonder marks the beginning of a new era for the Mushroom Kingdom. Super Mario Bros. Wonder graces the cover of our latest issue of Game Informer to celebrate the impending release of this new 2D adventure.
As part of my research into Super Mario Bros. Wonder, I flew to both U.S. coasts – first New York and then Seattle. I’ve spent more than two hours playing it and have spoken to several key members of the development team. The cover story features exclusive hands-on with stages nobody else has played, behind-the-scenes stories about the development of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and even a discussion of the series’ legacy.
