Despite being primarily an RPG, Hogwarts Legacy has a few MMO elements and features that you might not expect in an open-world game. Like farming or Pokémon games, you can breed creatures like beasts or animals in Hogwarts Legacy. Find out how to unlock breeding, which creatures can be bred, and why in our Hogwarts Legacy guide.
How to Breed Creatures in Hogwarts Legacy
In Hogwarts Legacy, you can capture and tame beasts. In the Room of Requirement, once you unlock The Vivarium, you can showcase the animals you capture. Later during the campaign, you can even breed the animals.
After completing the “Plight of a House Elf” and “Charles Rookwood’s Trial” side-quests, you can get the next one (“The Foal of the Dead” from Deek The House Elf (in the Room of Requirement). As part of this quest, you will be required to capture the male and female versions of the Thestral as well as purchase and learn the Breeding Pen Spellcraft, which is essentially a tutorial for creature capture and breeding.

In Hogsmeade, you can get the Breeding Pen Spellcraft, the ability to conjure a Breeding Pen, by going to “Tomes and Scrolls”. To capture Thestral, you will need some Pokeballs – just kidding. Find them in their habitat in the upper right corner of the map, just look for the purple paw icon on the map – then use Nab-Sack to capture them.
The breeding process can be initiated by interacting with the book in front of the Breeding Pen when there is a male and female version of Thestral (or another beast). The process will take some time, just like growing plants in Hogwarts Legacy, so return in 30 minutes for the offspring.
