It’s sometimes just necessary to play a big, dumb and fun game. It was a relief to venture over to Focus Entertainment’s booth after a slow Gamescom that felt very lacking in the triple-A space, and rip and tear through the grimdark future. Featuring some of the most gorgeous visuals in the show, coupled with unapologetically bloody and over-the-top action, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 reminds me why I love games – especially ones that are bombastic, indulgent, obnoxious games. You can play the behemoth player character wandering around saying cool stuff like, “We won’t sacrifice strategy for expediency, brother” before shooting something so hard it explodes. Standing there, he’ll slam magazines of ammo the size of an arm into a carbine, about four heads taller than a hench marine next to him. After saying something about the “heresy of alien scum,” he will begin the linear section of the level.
